Why this petition matters

Started by Regenerate Africa

Mida Creek is a beautiful biodiversity hotspot, home to mangrove forests, that spills into the Watamu Marine Park on the coast in Kilifi County, Kenya.  This pristine area receives free sunshine and strong coastal winds year round, therefore should not be considering installing an expensive, risky Nuclear Power Plant.

We are here to petition NuPEA's proposal of a Nuclear Power plant most particularly in Kilifi County but also anywhere in Kenya.

The threat of accidents, cancer, as well as the expenses needed to continue to run this endeavour far outweigh the benefits. The region proposed is already facing many socio-economic challenges that far supersede the need of power, like hunger and drought.  Let us focus first on getting the community their basic needs to water and food before considering a massive Nuclear Power plant that will only further depress this region.

Kilifi is a Biodiversity hotspot; home to Arabuko Sokoke Forest; the largest remnant of coastal forest left in East Africa, The Watamu Marine Park and reserve whose coral and fish populations are already severely threatened.

Kenya is ripe for a market in regenerative technologies like geothermal, solar, and wind, therefore there is no need to endanger our people, or our wildlife with this expensive, risky eyesore that is Nuclear Energy.

Who wants to see the Mangrove forests destroyed to house nuclear energy plant?  Or furthermore to have to behold a massive concrete structure- that would steal the homes of villagers, migrating birds and impact the lungs of creek; the mangroves.

Let us lean in to renewable energy sources, and act on our ability to keep Nuclear Power Plants OUT of KENYA PERIOD. Let us learn from the mistakes of the past and SAY NO to NUCLEAR in Kilifi County, Kenya!
