Supporters - thank you! I started this petition to give some airtime to the flaws of train trenches, which are the most probable alternative to "skyrail". With your help, we are achieving this goal. By supporting this petition, you have helped to get people talking about level crossing removals; about what you want or don't want in your suburb; about what works and what doesn't work for your community; about what's good for Melbourne as a growing city. You are showing that Melbourne is open to sensible debate, and can smell political spin a mile off. Lowering rail lines and stations into a trench is a common grade separation method around Melbourne. Everyone seems to know how it works: they've seen it done, and they think they like it. Until it happens in their suburb. Then they realise maybe it wasn't as good as they anticipated, maybe an opportunity to do something better has been missed. Train trenches are hugely expensive and disruptive, just to achieve a single outcome - a level crossing removed. They miss the opportunity to actually do a whole lot more for urban amenity and the local community, for the same price. Train trenches turn out to have many urban amenity and liveability impacting flaws - probably more than "skyrail". The honest truth about rail lines and grade separation is there's no perfect method. They all have some good features, and some bad features. But once they're done, we'll be living with them for more than 50 years, so we had better get them right. In the eloquent words of Michelle Griffin: "To get the best for this city, we all need to calm down." Let's move the debate beyond the hysteria, and start considering the facts, the pros and cons of all options, both for the local community, and the wider good of the people of Melbourne. @NoTrainTrenches
