No More Surprise Road Works! #DoBetterT2D
The issue
To the relevant local and state government authorities,
We, the undersigned residents and community members of Everard Park and surrounding areas, call upon the responsible authorities to urgently improve communication, consultation and mitigation measures relating to ongoing roadworks affecting our community.
Residents have experienced repeated instances of:
• Road closures and access restrictions occurring with little or no notice.
• Surrounding streets, in particular cul de sacs, being effectively cut off despite limited alternative access routes.
• Significant overnight construction noise disrupting sleep and impacting health and wellbeing.
• Works occurring that are not accurately reflected on publicly available project maps or notifications.
• Parking restrictions being implemented without adequate warning to affected residents.
• Commitments regarding advance notification and alternative accommodation for significant overnight works not being consistently honoured.
• Community consultation sessions being scheduled during weekday business hours, limiting participation by working residents.
• A lack of accessible remote participation options for residents unable to attend consultation sessions in person, including people with disabilities, chronic health conditions, caring responsibilities and mobility limitations.
We recognise the importance of infrastructure projects and understand that some disruption is unavoidable. However, residents have a right to timely, accurate and accessible information about works that affect their homes, access, health, sleep, safety and daily lives.
Accordingly, we call upon the responsible authorities to:
Improve advance notification of all works affecting access, parking, traffic conditions and noise levels.
Ensure online project maps and public information accurately reflect all planned works and disruptions.
Provide clear information regarding road closures, detours and access arrangements.
Honour commitments regarding alternative accommodation or other mitigation measures when significant overnight works are expected to impact residents.
Establish reliable notification systems that ensure affected residents receive timely information.
Improve communication and consultation with affected residents.
Offer community consultation sessions outside standard business hours.
Provide accessible online and remote participation options for all consultation activities.
Review current engagement practices to ensure they are inclusive and accessible to residents living with disability, chronic health conditions and other barriers to participation.
We respectfully request a formal response outlining how these concerns will be addressed.
