No More Shelved Cures or Price Gouging: Demand Action Against Pharma Profiteering

Large pharmaceutical companies are buying out smaller ones that have developed revolutionary new drugs for the sole purpose of shelving the drug or making it wildly unaffordable to protect their profits off of treatments. This is because the new drug would reduce demand for their treatments and provide competition. They do this because they make more money from treatments and retain their customers as they continue to be afflicted with the disease. Many thousands of people die each year here in the US because of the intentional shelving and massive up charge on these drugs. Due to drug patents, a company can shelve the drug and no other company can pursue it and it is incredibly rare for a company to research and pursue a drug once the patent has worn off due to the high costs of research and the lower profit from non-monopolized drugs. Many drugs have up charges from manufacturing costs upwards of 2,000% (such as insulin)!
The Effects:
If this continues to occur, many thousands more people will continue to die each year when there is medicine that could have been available and affordable to them. If we can gather enough signatures to bring this to congress, then we could save countless American lives from their diseases and afflictions. We have to take action now because once these lives are lost, nothing can ever bring them back. Nothing can ever repair the damage done to their families and the pain caused from our complacence if we do not choose to take immediate action.
What Is Our Petition Proposing?
Our petition proposes that we force pharmaceutical companies to have no greater than a 700% up charge from manufacturing costs and that if a larger company acquires a smaller company, they will be required to research at least 15% (or 3 if 15% of the patented drugs is less than 3) of the drugs under patent by the acquired company until the patent wears off and to keep these drugs on the market for a duration specified in the terms of the acquisition.
What Can You Do To Help?
