No More Penalties for Purple Hearts: Give Veterans Their Full Benefits

No More Penalties for Purple Hearts: Give Veterans Their Full Benefits
The Issue
Army veteran Dan Nevins lost both legs in Iraq while serving his country with courage and honor. After 36 surgeries and an 18-month recovery at Walter Reed, Dan rebuilt his life and continued to serve others, even becoming a certified yoga instructor.
But when he left the military earlier than planned due to his injuries, he was stunned to learn he would not receive his full retirement pay.
Like about 50,000 other wounded veterans, Dan is losing part of his retirement pay just because he also gets disability benefits. This unfair rule — known as the “wounded veterans tax” — breaks the promise we made to take care of those who served.
No one who gave their health, their limbs, or their peace of mind in service to this country should be forced to give up the financial support they earned. Veterans like Dan are being asked to survive without the full benefits they were promised. That is not only unfair, it’s un-American.
Congress must pass the Major Richard Star Act and end this injustice. Veterans who were medically retired because of combat injuries deserve both their retirement pay and their disability compensation.
Sign to tell Congress: Keep your promise. Support Dan Nevins. Support all our wounded veterans. End the tax.
