No More Pedestrian Deaths
The Issue
Huntington Park Run Club joins the People's Vision Zero, Streets Are For Everyone, MOVE LA, and all street safety advocates in alerting traffic violence as a public health crisis.
Fatal vehicle collisions affect the health of entire communities. The City of Los Angeles committed to Vision Zero, a plan to end traffic violence by 2025. Instead, pedestrian deaths have tripled, with more traffic fatalities than homicides reported in recent years.
The cities of Huntington Park and South Gate have experienced a devastating rise in fatalities over the past 10 years, yet, neither city has an established plan to end traffic deaths.
We, the undersigned, request that the City of South Gate and the City of Huntington Park formally designate funding and resources to committing to an improved version of the Vision Zero plan.
We demand a safe place to run and walk. City council and staff will allocate resources for signs, lighting, and designated lanes around South Gate Park. City council and staff will enter joint-use agreements with local high schools to open the track for community use. City council and staff will conduct yearly mandatory walk audit with local street safety advocates.
We want active transportation and protected bike lanes. Active transportation infrastructure helps our communities move safely. City leaders should involve community members and groups in conversations about infrastructure improvement plans.
We need community-led traffic safety programs that include neighborhood crossing guards, more jobs in the community, and programming that instills sense of togetherness and care for one another.
We deserve better communication between all agencies that make decisions about us. Our cities are intertwined and our government workflow should reflect that. Create a joint Vision Zero plan alongside other cities and unincorporated areas in Southeast Los Angeles.
