These celebrities all have one thing in common- they’ve all lived within miles of one of California’s most toxic sites, and the site of one of America’s worst nuclear meltdowns. Do you know which one?
You’re right if you said the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL), located in the hills above Los Angeles and Ventura County. The crazy thing is that many Californians have never heard of the SSFL. Celebrities still spend millions of dollars to buy homes nearby even though contamination can reach them and their families- causing health issues, autoimmune diseases, thyroid problems, and even cancer.
I seriously doubt these celebrities got anything more than a sentence warning them about the Santa Susana Field Lab in their mortgage paperwork. Because that’s all I got.
One sentence. My husband and I were so excited to be buying our very first house. It was only three miles from the SSFL, but we had never heard of it. When I asked the lady helping us sign our mortgage paperwork about the one sentence warning us, she said, “Honey, that’s a really old problem. The Santa Susana Field Lab doesn’t hurt anyone anymore.” And I trusted her.
If we had any idea that living here would give our daughter cancer the next year, we would have canceled the sale right then.
The contamination from the SSFL reaches our community quietly. Especially during heavy rains, strong windy seasons, and during fires (like the Woolsey fire which started at the Santa Susana Field Lab and destroyed several celebrity’s homes). There aren’t any warnings about the dangers from our government except a barbwire fence around the site and that sentence in our mortgage paperwork, even though it’s a superfund site.
Our group, Parents Against SSFL has taken on the job to warn our community since our government has failed to do a good job of it. And we’re helping lead the fight for the site’s complete cleanup.
Will you help us get the word out, to protect celebrities and the surrounding community from the dangerous contamination at the Santa Susana Field Lab?
It’s easy- just follow us on TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook and like or share our posts. Or if you follow these celebrities on social media, feel free to reach out to them and warn them.
They deserve to know, just like the rest of us. You can also let them know about our Emmy-nominated documentary about the site, “In the Dark of the Valley.”
