My eleven year-old daughter is a two-time cancer survivor. (That's her in the photo right before her bone marrow transplant). For me, "going gold" for childhood cancer awareness month is helping people learn facts like:
Childhood cancer has risen over 40% since 1975!!
Researchers wrote “The true burden of environmentally induced cancer has been grossly underestimated," in the 2008 President’s Cancer Panel.
People in America still don't seem to realize that radioactive and toxic environments are one of the main issues causing the quickly rising rates of childhood cancer in America. And our government isn’t doing much about it.
There are over 1,300 Superfund sites in America (sites so dangerous that they’ve been put on a federal priority list). The US Department of Energy is responsible for 107 radioactive Superfund sites, one of which is the Santa Susana Field Lab. I live less than 3 miles away from it.
If they had cleaned up the toxic site near to our home, maybe my daughter would have never been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer. If they cleaned up all the sites, thousands of children could be safe from the threat of cancer.
Please join me to create awareness about contaminated environments that could cause childhood cancer, so no other child will suffer like my daughter has.
An easy way to do that is to show your support on social media.
You can download one of our designs or share directly from our pages on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram until September 30th.
Thanks for helping protect our kids against sites near their homes contaminated toxic and radioactive material!
Warmly,
Melissa Bumstead
