Court records now confirm that a lifetime Domestic Violence Protection Order (DVPO) has been granted against the owner Hugh Newmark, expiring in 2099 (protection order here). This is not a short-term dispute — it’s one of the most serious orders the court can impose.

In less than two weeks, over 200 people have signed the petition calling for change at 1-Up Lounge and its sister business, Cardhaven. The reasons keep piling up — and the latest developments make it clearer than ever that this place will not be safe without a complete transfer of ownership.

Shortly before the owner’s arrest for Domestic Violence, staff received an internal memo coaching them on how to talk to the public about the accusations against 1-Up and Cardhaven (see it here). This document was explicitly marked internal use only. Instead of transparency, it shows management focusing on controlling the narrative rather than addressing the underlying harm.

Timeline of Key Events

  • Petition nears 200 signatures — internal “talking points” memo distributed to staff.

  • Days later — victim publicly begs for the return of a stolen puppy (screenshot here).

  • Same victim announces she has “quit” Cardhaven, despite being a legal co-owner (post here), signaling deep instability in the business.

  •  Shortly after — Hugh is arrested for Domestic Violence and lifetime DVPO placed in effect.

Why This Matters
Domestic violence is never acceptable. In Washington State, nearly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience physical violence, sexual violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Business owners who face DVPOs, especially lifetime orders, cannot provide a safe and healthy environment for staff or patrons — especially when that business also markets to and serves minors.

1-Up Lounge and Cardhaven have already faced many corroborated allegations. Pair that with domestic violence, coercive control, and business instability, and the risk to the community becomes undeniable.

Adding to the concern — on 1-Up’s own website, they promote “Cocktails & Coloring” using child-friendly imagery. Mixing alcohol service with marketing that appeals to minors is dangerous and deeply irresponsible for a business already facing abuse allegations.

Our demand:

Full transfer of ownership for both 1-Up Lounge and Cardhaven — or closure.

Until this happens, 1-Up Lounge and Cardhaven are not safe spaces for staff, patrons, or the community.
