We call upon Premier David Eby and the BC government to fulfill their long-standing commitment to establishing an anti-racism incident reporting hotline in British Columbia. We must address the alarming rise in hate crimes and support those impacted by racism in our communities. Despite promising to establish this crucial resource, the government's inaction has left racialized communities without the necessary tools to combat racism effectively.
British Columbia has witnessed a distressing surge in hate crimes and racist incidents, causing immense harm and fear within our diverse communities. The Vancouver Police Department reported an increase of 717% in hate incidents against East Asian residents between 2019 and 2020 alone. Similarly, the Jewish community here in British Columbia experienced an 111% increase in antisemitic incidents between 2020 and 2021. The recent report from B.C.'s Human Rights Commissioner recommends the creation of a community-led, province-wide centralized reporting mechanism for hate incidents. This crucial initiative would provide support, assistance, and a platform for victims to report incidents of racism promptly.
Despite the urgent need for action, the government's response has been disheartening. The promise of an anti-racism incident reporting hotline made years ago remains unfulfilled. This lack of progress and the absence of public information regarding the project's status is deeply concerning. Victims of hate incidents continue to suffer in silence, while racism goes unchecked. This failure to deliver on their commitment raises serious doubts about the government's dedication to addressing hate incidents and supporting racialized communities.
The establishment of an anti-racism incident reporting hotline is an essential step towards combatting racism in British Columbia. It would provide a crucial avenue for victims to report incidents, seek support, and access resources. Additionally, a multilingual hotline would ensure that language barriers do not prevent individuals from seeking help and reporting racist incidents. The centralized reporting mechanism recommended by B.C.'s Human Rights Commissioner would empower communities, improve data collection, and contribute to effective policy-making to address the root causes of racism.
Sign this petition and lend your voice to the demand for immediate action against racism in British Columbia. Together, we can hold the government accountable and ensure the establishment of the anti-racism incident reporting hotline. Let us send a strong message to Premier Eby that racialized communities deserve better, and that we stand united against hate in all its forms.
