The Issue

Over a decade ago, Target promised its customers that it would stop sourcing pork from farms that confine pregnant pigs in tiny gestation crates—and in 2016, it committed to selling only cage-free eggs by 2025. These were important, compassionate steps forward. But all these years later, millions of animals are still suffering in Target’s supply chain.

This week, members of Humane World for Animals delivered over 195,000 petition signatures to Target’s headquarters in Minneapolis. Why? Because Target hasn’t kept its word. Gestation crates—so small pigs can’t even turn around—and barren battery cages for hens are still being used by some of Target’s suppliers, even though these systems have been banned in 14 U.S. states and phased out by countless companies, including McDonald’s, Costco, and General Mills.

It’s unacceptable for one of the country’s biggest retailers to ignore its own promises and continue selling products tied to such extreme confinement and cruelty. These are not new issues. Target has had more than enough time—and more than enough consumer support—to make good on its word.

Every day that passes without change is another day animals suffer in conditions that most Americans find appalling. Pigs confined for months. Hens crammed into wire cages with barely enough room to spread their wings. And all this, while Target continues to market itself as a company that cares about ethics, responsibility, and doing what’s right.

We're asking Target to do better. It’s time to eliminate gestation crates and fully transition to cage-free eggs across all stores. No more delays. No more broken promises.

Target’s customers are watching. We believed in your commitment once—now we’re demanding you follow through.

Sign this petition to call on Target to stop stalling and start delivering on its promises to protect animals.
