Petition updateNo Layoffs, No Shift Closures: UPS Teamsters Fight Back!Day Shift 2.0: The Swan Island Closure and Local 162’s Collaboration with Management

We are witnessing the elimination of Swan Island as history repeats itself: UPS announces a plan—or in this case, it leaks—and once again, our union reacts instead of acts. Local 162, rather than resisting layoffs, appears to be facilitating them.

Ben Vedus’s initial response exemplifies this passive approach:
"If interested in moving, please contact your Full-Time Supervisor or Local 162."
No grievances under the technology clause. No bargaining to stop the closure. No visible fight to protect our jobs.

July 1st marks the likely end of Swan Island as we know it. The union has months to resist, grieve, or challenge these plans, even if only to send a message. Yet, instead of resistance, we see complete facilitation of layoffs and the closure. This lack of action reflects a broader failure in leadership—a failure to hold UPS accountable despite its billions in annual profits

The personal toll:
For years, I have stood up for my coworkers, often in the face of attacks and resistance from both the company and within union circles. I fought to save the day shift and called out flaws in the contract when others stayed silent. That advocacy has come at a cost—professionally, personally, and emotionally.

At this point, I am stepping back. I no longer have the energy or will to keep fighting a battle that feels so uphill, especially when many coworkers—those I fought to protect—voted for this contract and dismissed my warnings. This is not a decision I take lightly, but one made out of necessity for my own well-being.

To my coworkers:
This fight doesn’t end with me stepping away. The loss of Swan Island and the silence from leadership demand accountability. The future of all UPS Teamsters is at stake. While I may no longer be at the forefront, I urge you to keep questioning, organizing, and holding leadership responsible for their inaction.

Even if I won’t be leading this charge, I hope someone else will. You have my best wishes and my hope that a spark of enthusiasm will ignite the change we so desperately need.
