As a long-time parent at Bathgate Elementary School, I am deeply troubled by recent events involving our trustee, Judy Bullockus. Her use of a racial slur does not only violate the principles we strive to instill in our children but also betrays the core values associated with the Character Counts Awards. When a person in a leadership position, such as a school trustee, makes derogatory statements, it sends mixed messages to our children about the kind of behavior that is acceptable. Award ceremonies should be led by individuals who embody the traits we wish to see flourish in our society. Allowing someone who has exhibited behavior contrary to these standards to present these awards undermines their significance. We demand that Judy Bullockus recuse herself as a presenter for the Character Counts Awards to ensure that Bathgate Elementary continues to be an environment where character truly does count.
