The Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor have today written to all staff at Birkbeck to say that they expect to meet 'all staff savings targets this financial year on a voluntary basis.' This means that, for the time being, staff in the Department of English, Theatre and Creative Writing are secure in their jobs. Thank you for signing this petition, for supporting our Department, and for helping to protest in order to make the College's leadership embarrassed by its destructive course of action. 

The future remains unclear, and seismic changes continue to rock UK Higher Education. It is clear that all departments the arts and humanities must come together to defend, promote and celebrate what they do, as long as there remain those committed to the diminution and destruction of these areas.
