Why this petition matters

Started by Kiri Blakeley

Prospect Park Alliance says it cares about animals and wildlife. Inside its walls dwell raccoons, swans, geese, chipmunks, and many more. The Alliance touts the park's 250 species of birds and that it is "Brooklyn's last remaining forest." It has an Audobon society that teaches children about respecting wildlife and says the park is "an important wildlife habitat."

Inside the park is also the Prospect Park Zoo, home to baboons, sheep, dingos, alpacas, red pandas, and many more!

On the edges of the park is the Kensington horse stable and the Sean Casey Animal Rescue Group, home to dozens of dogs, cats, birds, and other rescued animals.

Yet the park often has fireworks displays, especially on July 4th. Perhaps one can forgive that, but now the park is having them at other times of the year too, including one coming up on June 17 for a performance of the Philharmonic.

Why must celebrating music be accompanied by terrorizing animals with ear-splittingly loud noises? One can only imagine the fear of the zoo animals, the wildlife. I live on the edge of the park and it's bad enough for my cats, and I have soundproof windows.

What must the animals be feeling as it sounds like bombs are dropping on them?

Prospect Park can't tout its pro-environment stance while simultaneously scaring animals half to death.

This petition will go to the Prospect Park Alliance to STOP fireworks inside of the park.
