No Elmhurst Truck Stop!

The Issue

No Truck Stops in Elmhurst!

A proposed truck stop for the Golden Pheasant restaurant property is not allowed under the Elmhurst Zoning Ordinance. We ask the Elmhurst City Council to REJECT the proposed truck stop at the southwest corner of Route 83 and North Avenue.

A Truck Stop is Bad News for Elmhurst

Bad for Residents

  • Bad for public health, safety, comfort and quality of life for residents
  • Goes against the goals and recommendations of the Elmhurst Comprehensive Plan to enhance the entrance into the City at North Avenue and Route 83
  • Exhaust from idling trucks is unhealthy for residents, patrons and employees of businesses in the area.

Bad for Traffic

  • More congestion – Elizabeth Street was not designed or intended to handle a stream of never-ending semi-trailer trucks.
  • Increased danger – mixing automobiles with semi-trailer trucks entering and exiting the truck stop is a recipe for disaster.
  • Intersection is already identified as a “challenging walking/bike route” and difficult crossing in the Elmhurst Bike Plan. Heavy trucks pose a significant risk to cyclists.

Bad for Salt Creek and the Environment

  • The property lies in a flood plain with risk for drainage or runoff.
  • The DuPage County Forest Preserve and the Salt Creek are located within feet of the planned truck stop.
  • The Forest Preserve and Salt Creek should be protected and not used as a repository for storm water from the truck stop.

The expansion request is for an “automobile service station” but in truth, it’s a truck stop.  An automobile is NOT a truck, no matter what the developer or anyone else says.
