No Data Centers in the Tampa Bay Area

No Data Centers in the Tampa Bay Area
The Issue
Living in the beautiful Tampa Bay area of Florida, we are deeply connected to our lush environment and vibrant communities. Recently, there has been a proposal to build a data center in the Gandy area of Pinellas County, which has raised serious concerns among residents. We strongly believe that allowing such developments would compromise Tampa Bay’s natural beauty, put a strain on our electric grid, and diminish the quality of life we treasure. Data centers are known to consume vast amounts of energy and water, and they generate significant heat. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, data centers can consume 10 to 50 times the energy per floor space of a typical commercial office building, which contributes to environmental degradation and will ultimately destroy our tourism industry. A single data center may require up to a million gallons of water a day for cooling purposes, according to data from prominent environmental organizations. This consumption can lead to water shortages and adversely affect local ecosystems. Our local economy thrives on tourism and nature-centered activities, which could be severely impacted by the industrial presence of data centers. From our internationally loved beaches to our unique and protected wildlife, Pinellas County is a hotbed for tourism that contributes significantly to our local economy. Development that detracts from this threatens not only our environment but our economic foundation, which could result in fewer jobs and reduced income for local businesses. The introduction of a data center would also increase traffic and noise pollution, affecting the serenity of our neighborhoods. This could lead to a decrease in property values and the overall appeal of our communities as a desirable place to live. We urge our county leaders to protect their community's well-being. Instead of constructing new data centers, we advocate for investing in energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy sources. Join us in protecting the future of the Tampa Bay area by ensuring that our environment and economy continue to serve as a beacon of sustainability and prosperity. Please sign this petition and let our county officials know that we stand united in opposition to the development of data centers in our cherished community.
