No Data Centers in Matanuska-Susitna Borough Alaska
The Issue
As of July 22nd 2026 there are now 2 proposed data centers in Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
First is with Terra Energy where on March 17, 2026, the Mat-Su Assembly voted 6-1 to override a mayoral veto, officially advancing a partnership with Terra Energy to market borough land for a data center or similar high-energy-use facility.
Second is a free land grab of 19,950 acres (subject parcel) of State-owned land in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough to the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA) for development of scalable data centers that leverage existing and planned utility corridors.
Key details regarding the Terra Energy data center project as of May 2026:
Approval Status: The Assembly approved the partnership on March 3, 2026, and officially overcame a veto on March 17, 2026, authorizing the partnership to market borough land.
The Partnership: The approved resolution (RS 26-019) supports a two-year agreement with Terra Energy Center Corporation.
Project Goal: The project aims to develop a data center or large-scale industrial facility, potentially powered by a proposed coal plant, on borough land, with a 1,000-acre permit already in place near Port MacKenzie.
Project Scope: While the marketing partnership is approved, this is not a final construction permit; it enables marketing to potential developers and further studies.

AIDEA seeks to acquire these “State lands near Houston, Alaska to establish a multi-use industrial and energy development district that catalyzes private investment and creates durable jobs for Mat-Su residents.” AIDEA anticipates that the multi-use industrial and energy development district could host a variety of complementary uses, including but not limited to:
- Development of scalable data centers that leverage existing and planned utility corridors.
- An intermodal logistics hub adjacent to the Alaska Railroad centerline and the George Parks Highway.
- Energy and utility corridors (e.g., electric, natural gas, fiber optic) to serve tenants and enable further energy development.
- Innovation and advanced manufacturing pads.
- Utilization of on-site gravel and rock resources to enhance the viability of AIDEA development projects.
While these are still in the planning stages we need to show our council members we do not want a data center destroying our lands & community!
