SAVE VIZAG  - A call to protect our Home

Today, Vizag touched 43°C. It doesn’t just feel hot; it burns and drains us . Look around, how parents and children suffering with this intense heatwave? Every year, the summer gets hotter , the air grows thicker with dust, our water sources are depleting , and the cool sea breeze we grew up with,  is slowly fading into a memory.

Ask yourself, is this the city we want to hand over to  future generations? A city where stepping outside feels like walking into an oven? What good is wealth if children cannot breathe clean air? What is the point of progress if we have to fight for drinking water?

Now, there are plans to build massive DATA CENTERS  in the heart of our city and push heavy industries right into our hills, forests, and water catchment areas.

Many citizens and environmental observers are concerned that unchecked industrial expansion could worsen local heat stress, place additional pressure on water resources, and reduce the quality of life for future generations.

These concerns deserve careful scientific evaluation and public discussion. Look at the faces of children and ask yourself: What must I do to help protect the future of my Vizag ?

Let’s be honest with ourselves. If a project destroys the very environment that gives us water and protects our ecosystem, is it development, or is it just destruction ?

People  of Vizag are capable of carefully assessing both the benefits and the long-term environmental costs of major development projects. We believe that decisions affecting our future should be transparent, evidence-based, and open to meaningful public participation.

Friends, we are not against development or Data centres. We want our youth to get jobs. But why must Vizag always carry this heavy burden? Why cram everything into one city until it breaks? Why not spread these projects to coastal regions of Ongole, Nellore, Srikakulam, or Tekkali?

It is simple logic, doing so would create jobs across the state while saving our home from choking. Yet, our leaders continue to ignore this sensible path.

When the water runs dry and the heat becomes unbearable in next two years , politicians and corporations will not suffer. They will simply pack up and move to greener pastures. But we will and have to stay because we have nowhere else to go, as this is our HOME.

In past , we have faced disasters before, and we did not run away. When the Hudhud cyclone tore through our streets, when the HPCL fire broke out, and during tsunami  and earthquakes, we stayed, survived, and rebuilt.

But today, as our hills are being torn away, everyday morning  coal dust settles in our houses, and as our children develop respiratory problems, yet we are just watching them suffer.

When our children grow up and ask, "When important decisions affecting our city's environment were being made, what did we do?" what will we say? Will we look down in silence and shame? Or will we tell them you stood up and advocated for their future through lawful and democratic means?

It is time to wake up., not tomorrow, not next week but NOW , raise your voice to protect our hills,  water, and our homes. Let us ensure that future generations inherit a thriving and sustainable Vizag rather than one struggling with avoidable environmental challenges.

If we do not act today, the Vizag we love will exist only in our memories. And that is a future we simply cannot accept.

Why are we so silent? Are we waiting for someone else to fix it? Are we afraid to speak up ? As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once warned, we will one day have to repent not just for the destructive actions of the bad, but for the appalling silence of the good.

This isn’t about politics, next elections. It is about whether Vizag will be place to live in next two to twenty years.History teaches us that cities are not lost only because of those who damage them. They are also lost when good people like you see the danger and choose to remain silent.

Nobody is coming to save us. Not leaders , not outsiders. Only we can save Vizag.

We are Vizagites. We are not the people who break easily.  We are calm and huge as Bay of Bengal.  We are as strong as steel and as mighty as the unshakeable hills of the Eastern Ghats.  We are  deep, grounded, and enduring as the valleys of Araku.  This spirit of victory is in our blood, let's not go down without a fight.
