The Issue

Recent proposals to build a massive data center in our township have raised serious concerns among residents, including myself. The construction and operation of this facility threaten to increase pollution levels, posing significant health risks to our community.

Data centers are notorious for their massive energy consumption and emissions. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, data centers account for around 2% of the total energy consumption in the United States, and the emissions from such operations contribute to air and soil pollution. This increase in pollution can lead to respiratory issues, heart conditions, and other health problems for the residents of Washington Township. Not to mention our beautiful PROTECTED wetlands that have been disappearing over the years!

Moreover, the noise pollution during construction and operation will disrupt the tranquility of our community and local wildlife. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to noise pollution can lead to increased stress levels and adversely affect mental health.

Washington Township must not allow these data centers to compromise the health and well-being of its residents. We urge local authorities to stop the current proposal by denying the re-zoning, and protecting our community, our land, and our local wildlife!

I’ve heard from many of you about the proposed data center, and I genuinely appreciate everyone who has reached out to share concerns and perspectives. Right now, nothing has come before the Township Board for a vote, so I’m not in a position to take a stance yet. For now, my role is to listen, learn, and understand what matters most to the residents I represent. If and when this moves forward to the Board, I will thoughtfully consider the facts, the process, and the voices of our community. Thank you for staying engaged and caring so deeply about our township. My door is always open. — Michele Michele M. Milam Washington Twp Trustee
