No Data Center in Pine Island, MN!
The Issue
Petition Against Skyway Data Center Proposal
We, the undersigned, oppose the proposed construction of the Skyway Data Center within the Pine Island city limits, a project spearheaded by Ryan Companies US, Inc. and supported by members of our City Council. We stand united in defense of our environment, our community’s way of life, and the long-term future of Pine Island.
The proposal to build a 482-acre data center raises serious concerns that cannot be ignored:
Environmental Impact: Data centers consume vast amounts of water and energy. With the unknown environmental consequences of such a massive project, we cannot risk jeopardizing the health of our natural resources—water, air, and soil—that our community depends on.
Destruction of Farmland and Rural Heritage: This project threatens to erase valuable farmland, which has been the backbone of Pine Island for generations. The character of our community—rooted in agricultural tradition—will be permanently altered by the conversion of this land into a sprawling industrial complex. Destruction of farmland can’t be undone.
Burden on Taxpayers: While this project may offer short-term economic benefits, it poses a long-term financial burden on taxpayers, who may face public subsidies to fund its development. These subsidies come with no guarantees of long-term employment or sustainable benefits for the local community. Already documented taxpayer burdens across the country are important. Taxpayers have to pay for infrastructure upgrades to make it work in addition to the energy demands after its built.
Lack of Transparency: This project is moving forward with little public transparency. The true scale, purpose, and environmental impacts of the data center remain unclear. Without full disclosure, it’s impossible to assess the consequences this project will have on our community.
We, the residents of Pine Island, refuse to allow this project to proceed without a thorough, presice and independent environmental review and without a guarantee that it will benefit the local community, not just distant corporate interests.
Our demands are clear:
Full Public Accountability: We demand that local leaders act in the best interest of Pine Island citizens and provide full transparency about the project’s scope, which tech company is requesting a data center, environmental impact, and financial consequences.
Independent Environmental Review: Before any decisions are made, we demand an independent environmental impact assessment to ensure that our community’s resources and future are not compromised.
Protection of Our Land and Heritage: We stand firm in protecting the farmland and rural character that define Pine Island.
Responsible Economic Development: We seek development that supports our community long-term, provides sustainable jobs, and respects our environmental and cultural legacy.
Pine Island’s land, water, and future belong to the people. It is our collective responsibility to protect them from short-sighted corporate interests.
We demand that our local leaders take every legal, regulatory, and policy action necessary to stop the Skyway Data Center project from moving forward.
Sign this petition to stand up for the future of our community—our environment, our farmland, and the lives of generations to come.
