Evesham councillors have spoken and it was an overwhelming vote of no confidence in Cllr Nishigaki

Last night, (12th October), Cllr Emma Nishigaki became what is understood to be the first member in Evesham’s 421-year council history to face a vote of no confidence. The motion passed: 10 in favour, two against and four abstentions.
In a packed town hall, councillors sent a clear message about the standards expected of those elected to represent us and collectively said: Enough is enough!
To everyone who signed the petition, spoke out or supported this campaign: thank you. Our voices were heard.
But this was also a sorry day for Evesham. There is no pleasure in reaching the point where councillors formally declare they have lost confidence in a fellow member. As I said when presenting the petition:
“It is a sorry day for Evesham. But it would be sorrier still to recognise the harm and relentless disruption and do nothing.”
Eight hundred signatures represent a powerful call for accountability. Behind them are people who care about their town and expect high standards from their elected representatives.
Nobody should feel intimidated about raising concerns with their council - but many have reached out saying they fear being present at the vote or signing the petition.
My message to those people remains:
“To those who have suffered and feel no-one stands with them: I hear you, and I stand with you.”
Last night’s profanity and jeering from parts of the public gallery reinforced my concerns about the atmosphere surrounding these proceedings. In my view, the continuing disorder around Cllr Nishigaki is undermining respectful debate and setting a damaging example beyond the chamber.
The council chamber should welcome political debate, new voices and ideas that improve our town. Too often, its time and energy are consumed by grievances, complaints and disruption surrounding one councillor.
I understand the frustration of those who feel this saga casts a shadow over Evesham. Our town has good people doing valuable work. They deserve our support, and a council able to concentrate on serving its community. Addressing concerns openly is part of rebuilding that confidence.
As mentioned in the petition text - This vote does not remove Cllr Nishigaki from office. It does formally record a loss of confidence in her. It also strengthens our call for effective national powers to address serious and repeated councillor misconduct. A damning condemnation of a respected role.
Looking towards May 2027, I hope voters will examine candidates’ conduct as closely as their promises: how they treat people, respond to challenge and contribute to our community.
Last night, we asked councillors to say “enough is enough” and stand up for Evesham - and the majority did just that.
Now we must turn that decision into a renewed commitment to integrity, respect and public service.
I will keep the petition open for a short while so anyone who still wishes to add their support can do so.
Evesham and our surrounding communities deserve better. I will continue to stand up for that.
Thank you again,
Cllr Craig Reeves
