No Concrete, Steel, or Workers for Trump's Wall with Mexico!

Dear friends,

We must act now to stop the Wall. Please help.

A Harmful Symbol of Division and Hate
President Donald Trump is making good on his promise to build a concrete and steel wall that will span the border with our southern neighbor, Mexico. This would be an enormous symbol of division and hate, targeting hard-working immigrants living in the United States -- our current and future friends, family members, neighbors, colleagues, and employees. Its construction will wreak havoc on the local and global environment, negatively impact Indigenous border communities, raise gas prices, and exacerbate the current humanitarian crisis on the US/Mexican border. The Border Wall is needless and cruel, and simply should not be built.

Industry Can Refuse to Collaborate!
A project of this magnitude, stretching some 1,300 miles, will require collaboration across the construction industry. Civil engineers to design it, cement, concrete, and steel producers to supply the materials, and noble construction workers to erect it. That is, unless organizations and workers across the construction industry decline to collaborate.

We Need to Pressure Interested Companies
Some associations and companies deserve particular attention as they have already stated their interest in the project: National Precast Concrete Association, U.S. Concrete, Grupo Cemento de Chihuahua, and CEMEX.

Trump's Border Wall is Unethical
The first Fundamental Canon of the Code of Ethics for Engineers is to “Hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public”. The American Society for Civil Engineering and its members “are dedicated to ensuring a sustainable future in which human society has the capacity and opportunity to maintain and improve its quality of life indefinitely, without degrading the quantity, quality or the availability of natural, economic and social resources.” The Wall is an affront to these values.

Other Industries Have Refused Unethical Projects
Taking a moral stand like this would not be new for industry. Major tech companies and tech workers recently refused to create a Muslim registry. Lethal injection is no longer viable in the US due to pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer refusing to have their life-saving medicines used in a cruel procedure. While this proposed plan would be lucrative for the construction industry, it comes at the very high price of eroding fundamental American values.

The Wall Won't 'Work'
Also, it will not 'work', as described by Professor Michael Dear. He writes "In a nutshell: undocumented migration into the U.S. is at its lowest level since the 1970s; deportations are at the highest levels ever; but the contribution of the walls and fences in achieving these results cannot even be measured, still less proven."

Money For American Roads & Bridges, Not Walls
Any effort on this wall is a distraction from the necessary improvements to our crumbling road, bridges, water, and energy infrastructure. Put in another way, any effort on this hurtful wall directly harms Americans. All of the money spent on this behemoth, from taxes of one form or another, should instead go toward creating a sound infrastructure to help our economy and families succeed.

Opportunity to Avoid an International Fiasco
We are providing the construction industry an opportunity to promote the fine work it does building and maintaining our communities, and resist becoming entangled in an unethical international fiasco.  The Border Wall with Mexico is being modeled after the illegal and notorious Israeli walls encaging Palestinians.  A majority of American voters reject this wall, and most assumed the US, not Mexico, would pay for it (which GOP leaders recently confirmed).

Calling Construction Industry Leaders! Do the Right Thing!
We are calling on the leaders of the construction industry to revisit their Corporate Social Responsibility commitments, and to ask themselves this vital question "Should we be part of such an unpatriotic and unethical project which will damage our reputation, or should we refuse, and instead demand that our elected officials focus on improving American infrastructure?", and to:

  1. Publicly pledge that their organization is opposed to, and will not participate in, the proposed new border wall with Mexico.  Email us from an official account at dontbuildthatwall@gmail.com to be added to the Pledge list at dontbuildthewall.com
  2. Call on their member companies and local unions to do the same.
  3. Uphold their pledges throughout the Trump administration, and continue to advocate for better infrastructure for Americans!
