Formula retail uses are commonly referred to as "chain stores." Under Section 303.1 of the San Francisco Planning Code they are defined as "a type of retail sales activity or retail sales establishment that has eleven or more other retail sales establishments in operation, or with local land use or permit entitlements already approved, located anywhere in the world. Therapy Stores is attempting to open their 11th shop at 32 Clement Street and had chosen not to go through the proper permitting and regulations required by the city of SF until the Merchants Association stepped in.  We are asking for your help in gathering signatures to voice your opposition to No Chain Stores on Clement Street.

Our neighborhood thrives because of the unique character and charm brought by independent shops and family-run businesses. Each store and restaurant contributes to the tapestry of our vibrant community, making Clement Street a welcoming beacon for all who live and visit here.

For years, Clement Street has stood as a symbol of community engagement and local entrepreneurship. Our neighborhood shops know our names, our stories, and our preferences. They sponsor our local events, support our schools, and treat us not just as customers but as neighbors. This relationship is invaluable and irreplaceable.

Recently, there has been a push to allow a formula retail store to establish a presence on our beloved Clement Street. Such stores are generally known to have standardized offerings and practices that do not reflect the unique needs and culture of our community. This threatens to erode the unique atmosphere and local flavor that has made Clement Street an iconic San Francisco locale.

Evidence from other neighborhoods in SF and around the country shows that when formula retail displaces local businesses, there is a significant negative impact. Not only do profits exit the community, but the unique cultural landscape is irrevocably altered. Independent businesses have been instrumental in creating local jobs, and they circulate profits back into the community, unlike formula retailers that siphon revenues elsewhere.

Our goal is to preserve the character and integrity of Clement Street by opposing formula retail stores. We can achieve this by supporting city policies that limit formula retail expansion and by encouraging local leaders to take a stand with us to keep our community independent.

Together, we can protect our neighborhood’s identity and support the hardworking local entrepreneurs who make Clement Street what it is today. Let’s work to keep Clement Street a place where people know each other’s names, and our city’s cultural heritage remains vibrant and illustrious.
