NO Cellular Towers on FBISD school campuses! Our schools are safe learning environments !
The Issue
If the School Board won’t listen, isn’t time to VOTE for Change?? FBISD is a school district serving over 75,000 students & experiencing budget shortages. FBISD has contracted with Diamond & Branch Communications to build 100 foot commercial cellular towers on school campuses, in the middle of residential neighborhoods, in exchange for small monthly lease payments, bypassing local HOAs and zoning regulations.
Neighborhood schools like Walker Station Elementary are already contracted for a 100 foot tall cellular tower near the portable classes & school track, in a residential neighborhood, where neighbors were never notified! This shows a lack of transparency to the community!
Despite recent public outcry, at the July 27th Board meeting, FBISD Board President Kristin Tassin and Trustees Dr. Shirley Rose-Gilliam, Angie Hanan and Angie Wierzbicki voted to ADD MORE cellular towers to additional FBISD schools, such as Sartartia Middle, Garcia Middle School, Patterson Elementary and Old Kempner Stadium! These commercial cellular towers will be located on school campuses near residential neighborhoods. NO HOA input, no city zoning oversight! Ignoring community opposition!
Cellular towers are commercial structures that are 4 times taller than typical two story residences! They don’t belong in neighborhoods & at our schools! Schools should not be in the commercial leasing business!
So what's the harm?
1. These commercial structures have inconclusive health impacts that can potentially endanger the health of children & adults. There are reports of cancer clusters at schools with cell towers! The science has not been updated in 30 years!
2. Residential property values and sales are negatively impacted by proximity to cellular towers, as high as 20%! Many mortgage lenders have additional exclusions or liability requirements on home sale contracts.
3. Wind storms can also cause damages and liabilities, which may result in increased risks and costs to homeowners and neighboring properties.
4. Interestingly enough, local city zoning ordinances and HOA regulations don't apply because school districts “claim” these developments are exempt from oversight.
Recently, Texas school districts have banned students from using personal communication devices on campus. If connectivity is the issue, there are land based alternatives, which have already been setup on campuses. Also, the proposed cell towers will serve a particular vendor(s), like Verizon, so alleged connectivity is not improved for all.
Our schools should focus on educating our students in a safe learning environment! Schools should NOT be a place for intrusive commercial structures, business lease agreements and negatively impacting residential communities.
WE, the PEOPLE, are the only ones who can stop such harmful and unwanted developments at our schools and near our homes.
Please join our community efforts to demand accountability to the Fort Bend County residents!
