No Celebration of Freedom While Authoritarianism Persists

The Issue

A Call to Conscience
It is painful — and deeply alarming — to witness the undeniable parallels between today’s political climate in the United States and the rise of authoritarian regimes like Germany in the 1930s. This is no mere academic comparison — it is urgent, personal, and real.

We see how power is being abused, how communities are being targeted, and how silence is being weaponized. We remember the lessons of history, and we refuse to repeat them.

To stand by quietly as division deepens and liberty erodes is to echo the apathy that once enabled dictatorships to take hold. As we have learned time and time again: Silence equals death.

Why This Matters
The Fourth of July is more than just a date — it’s supposed to symbolize freedom, unity, and justice. But what are we celebrating if those ideals are under attack?

We cannot, in good conscience, participate in festivities while:

  • Democracy is undermined
  • The voices of marginalized communities are silenced
  • LGBTQIA+ rights are attacked
  • Racism, xenophobia, and religious intolerance are emboldened
  • Veterans, immigrants, and working families are treated as disposable
  • Justice is shattered, and the rule of law is trampled in broad daylight

True independence demands more than fireworks and flags — it requires courage, action, and accountability.

It requires personal responsibility — the willingness to acknowledge where we’ve fallen short, to repair what we can, to speak up when it’s easier to stay quiet. That’s the standard we must hold ourselves to, and the one we must pass on to our children.

We are not just resisting injustice for ourselves — we are teaching the next generation what it means to be caretakers of liberty, protectors of truth, and defenders of justice. Let them see us lead by example. Let them learn that freedom is not a gift we receive, but a promise we keep — together.

What We Demand
We are calling for a nationwide boycott of all Fourth of July celebrations — including parades, fireworks, and public ceremonies — until we see a meaningful change in leadership and direction. We demand new leadership. One that embodies democracy, not domination. One that unites, instead of dividing. One that fiercely protects the rights, dignity, and safety of all people:

  • People of every race, ethnicity, and nationality
  • Of every gender, sex, and orientation
  • Every religion and belief, and those with none
  • Citizens, immigrants, refugees, and the stateless
  • The housed and unhoused
  • The poor, the working, and the overworked
  • People with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and/or neurodivergence
  • Veterans and active service members
  • Elders and children
  • People who have been silenced, marginalized, criminalized, or cast aside

Every identity. Every voice. Every life that fascism seeks to erase.

This future cannot — and will not — include Trump, MAGA, or anyone who walks in their shadow. Until then, the 4th is not a celebration.
It’s a call to resist!

What You Can Do

  1. Sign this petition to stand with us
  2. Refuse to celebrate this July 4th in protest
  3. Have the hard conversations with your children, your neighbors, your peers
  4. Teach the next generation that patriotism is not blind loyalty — it’s the courage to hold your country accountable
  5. Spread the word — online, in your communities, among friends and family
  6. Remind others: this is not a rejection of America, but a demand that it lives up to its promise, for once!

This Is a Stand For Something. We are not just standing against tyranny — we are standing for liberty. For truth. For democracy rooted in equity, compassion, and courage.

Let this be a rallying point. Let this be the moment when we chose integrity over tradition, courage over comfort, and action over apathy. Let this be a moment we can look back on and say, "We did not sit still or remain silent! We took a stand and spoke up!"

Because with every choice we make — and every truth we tell — we teach the next generation what freedom really looks like. What being good and kind truly looks like. They are watching, witnessing your acts every moment. They will look back and remember what we did or did not do for their future!

We are not alone when we are united. Let our voices be heard. Let them ring louder than fireworks! Let them be the bells of Liberty, echoing across a nation in need of awakening!
