Research consistently shows that people with ADHD face a significantly increased risk of suicidal thoughts and attempts compared to the general population.

• Adults with ADHD are up to five times more likely to attempt suicide

• Around 1 in 5 adults with ADHD report having attempted suicide at some point

• Many more experience chronic suicidal ideation, especially when untreated

In Northern Ireland, the absence of commissioned ADHD services means many people remain undiagnosed or untreated, increasing isolation, mental distress, and risk.

While suicide data is not currently broken down by ADHD diagnosis, the evidence is clear:

lack of access to diagnosis and treatment worsens outcomes — and costs lives.

In Northern Ireland there were 221 suicides in 2023 — but mental health pressures, including untreated neurodivergence, are part of the environment that drives these tragedies.

This cannot be ignored any longer.
