The Issue

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) official policy eliminating digital device and screen time for early learners up to first grade was formally approved by the Board of Education on June 23, 2026, and officially went into effect at the start of the school year on August 12, 2026.

Key Policy Details
Target Groups: Early education (preschool), transitional kindergarten (TK), kindergarten, and first grade.
The Rule: Complete elimination of routine digital device use and classroom screen time.
Exceptions: Mandatory state or district testing, LAUSD Virtual Academy, and specific accommodations outlined in a student's IEP or 504 Plan.

NMUSD has formed a committee to respond to LAUSD's Screen Time & Device Use Guidelines, and a decision is expected by Fall of 2026.

Sign the petition in support of NMUSD adopting the same digital device policy for our early learners (preschool, TK, kinder and 1st grade). If adopting the policy is not feasible we ask that parents/caregivers have the option to "OPT OUT" of digital devices for the 2026/2027 school year.
