Allow NJ Students to Pass for the 2019-2020 School Year
The Issue
During this unprecedented time, students have been required to remain home and attend online schooling due to COVID-19. Students, parents, and teachers were all warned with short notice of this change, and little time to react and adjust. Now that online classes have began, students are overwhelmed with the new teaching environment and classwork at home. While students are instructed to do an extensive amount of work, we also have to deal with the stress of the COVID-19 virus as well as the measures placed by the New Jersey government to combat the spread of this virus.
This being considered, it just is not the same as having a teacher in the classroom. With online school in place, teachers typically do not make much interaction with there students other than e-mail, and occasional video chat-rooms. Students are expected to be able to teach themselves new material and implement it into work assigned by the teacher.
There is little to no actual teaching from the teachers, but it's not their fault either. Most students and teachers have never experienced an online class environment. The switch from in-class teaching to online teaching is just as stressful for teachers as it is to students. Nobody really knows how to go about this change.
As for the work itself, many teachers have students read material or watch videos in order to learn a new topic. Just afterwards, students are instructed to begin work. This is a completely ridiculous idea. Students NEED teacher integration in order to learn. With lack of teacher integration, it is extremely hard for students to go about their work. This, of course, will end up in lack of accuracy in the work, furthermore leading to bad grades.
I know many students with this exact situation; not understanding the material because they're not being taught properly. Teachers, as well, are having trouble teaching the students due to the online learning environment. It's a lose-lose situation. Students are going to be failing and you can not blame them. I hope you all can see where we are coming from.
All students need to be guaranteed a pass for the rest of the year, or for the time spent during online classes. It's not a radical idea, and would benefit everyone.
I appreciate the support from everyone who decides to sign.
