Show Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman your solidarity by signing this petition. Bonnie Watson Coleman, congresswoman from New Jersey was one of 17 Members of Congress who voted “NO” against resolution H.Res.246 opposing the non violent Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement for Palestinian human rights.
Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman’s Statement on her vote is as follows:

“ I do not support the BDS campaign, and I do not stand for anti-Semitism of any kind. I’ve spent my career fighting against hate and bias in every form, and that’s a fight that’s deeply personal for me. Boycotts have always been powerful tools against hate that have won rights for marginalized communities here and abroad — and denouncing the practice using the First Amendment right to boycott in the pursuit of change is a step too far. I will continue to support the state of Israel, our vital strategic partnership, and Jewish people here in the U.S. and abroad, just as I will continue to advocate for a two-state solution — but as a Black woman who understands the way in which boycotts won me and my community civil rights, I won’t vote against others ability to do the same. “

In America, boycotting goods as a matter of conscience or for affecting change is a civic tradition. Abolitionists boycotted goods produced with slave labor. In the 1930’s, the American Jewish Congress boycotted Nazi Germany and the Civil Rights Movement used boycotts to help overthrow Jim Crow.

BDS is a Palestinian-led movement for freedom, justice and equality Inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, and the US civil rights movements. It upholds the simple principle that Palestinians are entitled to the same rights as the rest of humanity. BDS, led by trade unions, academic associations, university students, communities of color, LGBTQI groups, progressive Jewish groups, mainline churches, and indigenous justice movements are supporting the morally consistent human rights principle of the BDS movement. BDS calls for Palestinian liberation on terms of full equality with Israelis. It categorically opposes all forms of racism, including anti-Semitism and employs cultural, economic, and political pressure on Israel to comply with international law.

We stand with Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman for standing for our constitutional right to Boycott. We ask that you stand with her and the right to boycott.

Although Congresswoman Watson-Coleman doesn’t not support BDS itself, it’s important to acknowledge the fact that her vote against the resolution helps us continue to participate in BDS. For this, we must express our gratitude.
