As you can see from the photos, the Nina from the early 2000s is not the same woman you see today.
In 2004, I was in Phuket, Thailand, when the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami struck. The day before, I made a last-minute decision to change the hotel I was staying in. That decision quite literally saved my life. If I hadn’t moved, I wouldn’t be here today.
But survival came with consequences. The trauma triggered MS in my body, which has since left me a wheelchair user. I went through deep grief for the life I once had, the independence, the freedom, the version of me that existed before that day.
Over time, I made a choice.
Instead of allowing it to define me, I channelled that pain into purpose. Today, I use my voice to campaign for better hospital care, for carers to be recognised as essential, and for families across the UK to receive the dignity and support they deserve.
