The I Can Dress Myself Movement

The I Can Dress Myself Movement
The Issue
The current dress code at Nikiski Middle High School is sexist and unfair. It targets mainly just girls who are told that they need to cover up their bodies from a young age. That in turn is making them think that their bodies are inherently sexual and should be sexualized. This causes a damaging mindset and leads to sexual discomfort and trauma for some individuals.
These underage girls are getting their bodies sexualized. They did not ask for this and grown men and women have no right to comment on their bodies.
If a grown adult staff member has an issue with what a student is wearing because it is “distracting” or is inducing a level of discomfort in the staff member, then that adult has a problem. DO NOT LOOK AT AN UNDERAGE GIRLS BODY IN A SEXUAL WAY.
The basis for most dress codes is that it is distracting to other students when as it turns out, no one is distracted by what students are wearing and the only people that have a problem with it are the staff. These staff will publicly embarrass students just because they want to be more comfortable around a minor. They will yell down a hallway or across a classroom to tell an innocent individual to “cover up”.
A person is entitled to dress however they please as long as they are not being publicly indecent, which no one is. As long as no one is showing any genitals, gang signs, vulgar quotes, or condoning drug and alcohol use, then a student should be free to dress however makes them feel happy and comfortable.
The constant sexualization of girls bodies is not ok. We are innocent underage people that do not want your sexual gaze. Stop thinking of our bodies as something inherently sexual or something for the pleasure of someone else. It is not. It is our body. We have the right to choose what we do and what we wear.
