The cost of governance in Nigeria is too high.

This high cost denies the government funds for development and critical infrastructure that will stimulate and grow the economy to cater to the fast-growing population in the country and plan for the future.

Sometime in 2018, Senator Shehu Sani representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly confirmed in a statement that Nigerian Senators are earning ₦13.5 million monthly as running cost. Fast forward to today, the number keeps growing.

The cost of running the Senate, House of Representatives and the Thirty-six States Houses of Assembly are estimated at ₦350 – ₦400 Billion Naira annually is way too high, unaffordable and imprudent.

We can operate the National Assembly and the States Houses of Assembly, smarter, better and more productive at a lower cost to the country.

We are therefore proposing an amendment to section 63 of the 1999 constitution which states that the Senate, House of Representatives and by inference, the States Houses of Assembly shall sit for not less than 181 days in a year.

Our suggested amendment are as follows:

  1. That the 181 days be reduced to 135 days annually.
  2. That the Senate, House of Representatives and the State Houses of Assembly be made Part-Time legislative bodies with members earning Sitting Allowances for work done.
