Today we are pleased to announce the NUT (National Union of Teachers) has formally supported our campaign for a legislation change that ensures all new schools in the UK provide adequate on-site outdoor space for our children to play and learn. Changes to legislation in 2012 and 2013 allow schools to open WITHOUT ANY on-site outdoor space. This was partly to appease problems faced by free schools and academies in finding suitable locations for new schools. Our children deserve access to quality outside space at school for recreation and the delivery of the physical education curriculum. Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, said: ‘The NUT is pleased to support this important campaign. Teachers know how important access to suitable outdoor space is for pupils’ recreation and learning. It was frankly ludicrous of the last Secretary of State for Education to allow free schools to be set up without any such space. I wish the campaign every success in persuading the recently appointed Secretary of State for Education to change tack and ensure all pupils benefit from access to outside space next to their school’. We are asking Nicky Morgan, the Secretary of State for Education to implement changes that stipulate the minimum requirement for on-site outside space in all new schools.
