Increase help and education about mental health in schools for teens
The Issue
When the Liberal Democrats said that they would be 'Serious about mental health' I thought great! Mental health should be taken more seriously, but I didn't understand how serious it actually could be.
Mental Health issues, like depression and eating disorders can effect everyone. I used to think 'It won't effect me' and you sort of think that it's something other people get and not your loved ones. Now, my younger sister is diagnosed with anorexia and as is another special girl in my life, My sister has been brought up in a loving family. I know that she was a very happy girl, but when her mental illness struck it was devastating.
A Mental Illness can effect anyone, and it's more common that you may think. Research suggest that 20% of young people have a mental health problem in any given year. I currently go to college in Surrey. I was shocked by the amount of people with cut marks on their wrists, this seems to be mainly females, but I've seen them on males as well. Imagine if this was your child, with the amount of stress put on teens with work, combined with the emotions teens can go through, it's not out of the question.
Not many people truly understand Mental Health problems unless it's properly effected them. This is why I want to get it taught more in schools, this will not only help to stop youths who develop mental health issues from feeling like they are alone, but also end a long standing stigma that is attached to it. A decent level of support should also be provided because often talking to someone really helps and in some cases can save a life.
