Today we got a new update on Kamp Koral. First we got a first look image, showing the main characters at camp. We also learn that the show will premiere on the Paramount Plus streaming service, the new name for CBS All Access.
so as we know, the show is still happening and there’s nothing we can do about it. I just wanted to reclarify some reasons on why the upcoming spinoff is not a good idea, and completely disregards multiple things from the show itself
1. It disrespects the wishes of Stephen Hillenburg. So the obvious one here, the one people always come back to and use as the argument against the show, is that Stephen Hillenburg did not want Spongebob to have spinoffs. In multiple interviews he’s stated that, including an interview as far back as 2009, as well as interviews with other Spongebob crew members, including this quote from a Paul Tibbitt interview in early 2018 before Hillenburg’s death: “In the animation business, you know, there always used to be the sort of joke. When you run out of ideas, you just do Muppet Babies. Steve [Hillenburg] would always say to me, ‘You know, one of these days, they’re going to want to make SpongeBob Babies. That’s when I’m out of here.'” (Source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.fatherly.com/news/spongebob-squarepants-kamp-koral-spinoff-stephen-hillenburg/amp/ As you can see from this quote, not only was he against the idea of a spongebob spinoff, but also very against the idea of the main cast as kids specifically, which is what Nick is doing. And that doesn’t even include the Patrick spinoff they’re currently planning.
2. Continuity. Spongebob has never been known for its good continuity, but there are some cardinal things in the show that the new spinoff is completely throwing out the window. Including: Spongebob meets Sandy for the first time in Season 1 episode 1c Tea at the Treedome, where they’re both grown adults. However, in the new look image, you can clearly see Sandy as part of the camp. Not even considering she only went underwater to conduct experiments for her bosses, 3 monkeys (From season 4 episode Chimps Ahoy) as an adult, she shouldn’t even have known spongebob existed when she was a kid, nor Spongebob even knowing what a land squirrel was until he met her in the first episode. Another continuity problem is Plankton, and possibly Mr Krabs. Spongebob doesn’t know who plankton is until the Season 1 episode Plankton!, however again in the first look image he appears to be working at the Camp he goes to, assuming they have interactions there. Whether Spongebob knew Mr Krabs or not is unknown, as in the first episode of the series Help Wanted, he knows who Mr Krabs is, but it seems like he just knows him as the owner of the Krusty Krab and not as a friend or someone he’s interacted with before.
Thats 2-3 major continuity problems from the original show that we can see just from the first look image. Who knows how many more problems it’ll have in the actual show.
In conclusion, we as a community will not consider anything in this show canon. Not as a spinoff. Not as continuity. Not as anything. It doesn’t exist. If we deny it any access to the real Spongebob world, it can’t force itself in, and we’ll just ignore it. Ultimately it’s up to us to decide whether or not it exists in our minds, so if we all decide it’s not real, then it isn’t. Just pretend it’s a fanfic or something, idk it’s just not canon.
If you actually read all this, thank you, and remember to spread the word, send the petition to people, keep getting more signatures, and together we can defeat Nickelodeon, whether it be literally, or just in our minds. Have a spongiful day
