Pokemon Go Coronavirus change needed.

The Issue

Pokemon go is usually a brilliant game for encouraging community spirit, exercise and outdoor play. However now, in Covid-19 lockdown we need changes to the game.

RAIDS - raids should be halted or just level 1 and 2 raids allowed, as these can be defeated by a lone trainer. Higher levels require a group of people, which right now in the UK, and I’m sure other affected countries, is not allowed.

POKESTOP RANGE - the circle in which a player can reach a pokestop, or a Pokemon gym, needs to be increased so players can reach these from home or more easily on their one permitted walk per day (as per Boris Johnson’s speech to the uk about lockdown). Not everyone is allowed outside either, some UK residents with illnesses are on total quarantine. At present you need to be rather close to the location, I’d guess it as about 15 meters. I’m proposing a 200 meter approximate range.

TELEPORT - perhaps a teleport ability, where a set number of times per day you could spin a pokestop or gym they can see in the distance? This would allow serious players to not break their playing streaks, but without risking public health.  This is not like “spoofing” where a player cheats the GPS settings on their phone, not if it was limited to what is visible in the game horizon, which I guess to be around 600 meters?

Niantic, the Pokemon Go app people, have been making changes, halting big events such as raid hours and safari zones. But these changes are not restricted enough.

I am seeing famous PoGo players attending raids still for “YouTube content” and local people still trying to organise raids via Facebook and messaging apps.

I truly feel Niantic have a social responsibility here to try to curb playing irresponsibly. Some players are obsessive about the game, and whilst I understand this, please consider the effects on the real world of this VR game.
