NHSTA: Stop Paper Letters for Auto Recalls Resolved via Over-the-Air Updates
The Issue
We, the undersigned, urge the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to end the wasteful practice of sending paper letters for automotive recalls that have been resolved via over-the-air software updates.
In an age where automotive technology is rapidly advancing, many vehicle issues are now being addressed through over-the-air software updates rather than traditional physical repairs. However, the current practice of sending paper recall letters to notify vehicle owners of these software updates is not only outdated but also environmentally and administratively wasteful.
These paper letters create unnecessary resource consumption, including paper, printing, postage, and administrative processing. Moreover, they contribute to confusion and inconvenience for vehicle owners who may not realize that a "software recall" does not require a visit to a dealership or service center.
By discontinuing the use of paper letters for automotive recalls that are resolved via over-the-air software updates, we can significantly reduce waste and streamline the recall notification process. This change will not only benefit the environment but also improve the efficiency of automotive safety communications.
We call upon Secretary Buttigieg and the NHTSA to embrace more sustainable and effective methods of communicating automotive recalls, particularly those related to software updates. Let's work together to eliminate unnecessary waste and ensure that automotive safety communications align with technological advancements.
