Emma Rumsey started this petition to Cambridge University Hospitals (Addenbrookes Hospital)

Each meal time at Addenbrookes and the Rosie Hospital a trolley of various food options is brought round to each ward area to feed the patients. Each patient is given a menu and they select a main, side and dessert from this menu. The food is then taken to them by a member of staff. Any surplus food leftover at the end of each round (after all patients have been fed) is thrown away. Sometimes this results in a full dish (for example a whole dish of lasagne) being thrown away as it is against trust policy to allow staff to eat any food that is left over. In this climate when funds, time and resources are limited, would it not be more financially viable and environmentally friendly to allow staff to eat the left over food even if it means a small fee/contribution paid, which would go back into the NHS ‘pot’. Many people struggle financially and some don’t have the time (after a 12.5 hour shift) to prepare themselves numerous meals and snacks for the following day. Surely eating a healthy meal from the left over food on the trolley is more cost effective all around than spending £10 a day on a meal and snacks from large chain stores. Less packaging, less food waste and a few more pounds per day to the NHS. There are a total of 45 wards in Addenbrookes alone and two meal times, imagine the food and money waste. Help me stop food waste!
