CAMHS are the NHS services that assesses and treats children and young people up to the age of 18 with emotional, behavioural or mental health difficulties… but then what?

Teenagers have to move from CAMHS to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) when they reach the age of 18. In SOME circumstances CAMHS may be able to keep them under their care for a few more months but this is rare.

Once the young adult turns 18, their guardians no longer have access to the medical mental health information, such as upcoming appointments/medication. This means the 18-year-old can be left to deal with their care all by themselves, adding to their anxiety. Just because they are legally an adult does not mean they are mentally an adult.

Waiting times for AMHS are averaging at 200 days… That’s 200 days for a vulnerable 18-year-old to be alone and without help, feeling stranded.

With so many adults aged 18 and over attempting suicide, or making plans to commit suicide, a sad fact is that many of these people have no care. Some are children and young adults that may have been wrongly discharged or are still waiting for an appointment. Or perhaps they were waiting for a transfer to AMHS.

Imagine if we, as a nation, can fix it. Well perhaps we can.

Eighteen is a difficult age. Is it really the time for such a tremendous change, moving them from CAMHS to an over-stretched adult mental health service? At 18, it is the time for 6th form and/or college to end, the beginning of work/university or whatever comes next as the young person transitions into adult life. For a healthy 18-year-old, these changes can bring uncertainty and anxiety. But for an 18-year-old with severe mental health problems, this can be a massively destructive and dangerous time. That is why it is the absolute worst time to withdraw the help and trust they have been receiving and throw them into an unfamiliar system where they do not even know if and when they will get the help so desperately needed.

So… change the age limit of CAMHS to 21. Save lives. Help the young. Keep them safe and make a difference.
