Following the inquest last November into Edward’s death, the assistant Coroner agreed that action was needed and has now produced a report. The aim of this report is to help prevent future deaths arising from similar circumstances, based on the concerns that he had after hearing what happened in Edward’s case. This report was addressed to the Secretary of State for Health (Jeremy Hunt) and the Chief Executives of the National Screening Committee, the National Institute for Clinical Excellence and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
The Coroner’s concerns included that “there is a difference of opinion and practice in the treatment of mothers (and their babies) who suffer from [their waters breaking] of a prolonged period” and “that GBS screening in pregnant women together with the use of intra-partum antibiotics ought to be reviewed.” The assistant coroner made it clear that action should be taken and the addressees are under a duty to respond within 56 days of the report. Accordingly, the responses are due any day now.
I hope that this report will prompt these organisations, who are in the best position to do so, to make real and much needed changes to the handling of GBS within the NHS and help prevent future deaths of babies like Edward, who would soon have been celebrating his second birthday with us. This needless harm to our precious little ones must be prevented NOW. Please continue to sign and share this petition – we must keep the pressure on those with the power to make change.
