Provide free paediatric first aid training for all parents.

Provide free paediatric first aid training for all parents.

The Issue

A friend of mine had to use her own personal paediatric first aid knowledge to resuscitate her own child. She remained calm, and fortunately, managed to save the life of her precious baby. Nicola is paediatric first aid trained, this training came about due to her job, but without this knowledge, the end could of been completely different. Nicola noticed that her baby was unresponsive and grey in colour, it was at this point that Nicola began resuscitation, after successful resuscitation, Nicola phoned for an ambulance, herself and baby were taken to hospital where a condition known as “BRUE”, Brief Resolved Unexplained Event, was diagnosed. This is a rare condition that effects 1 in 200 babies under the age of 12 months. There were no warnings, and no explanation as to why this event occurred. This story only had a happy ending due to Nicola’s fast thinking and quick response, a response that many parents and carers would not be able to carry out. Nicola was able to respond the way that she did as she is Paediatric First Trained. I am paediatric first aid trained, and the basics can be taught in roughly 8 hours. I feel that this is a course that all parents should be offered, free of charge, to ensure that they are confident in dealing with potentially life threatening situations regarding their own babies and children. Confident parents could also ease stress on NHS time and resources as they could deal with minor injuries themselves rather than using hospital A and E. Thank you for taking your time to read this incredibly scary story, and hopefully together, we can help more parents receive the training needed to potentially save more precious lives.
