Hospital for Cumbernauld

Hospital for Cumbernauld
The Issue
Cumbernauld is the largest and most populous town in North Lanarkshire and the 10th most populous locality in Scotland and yet it has no hospital in the town. In fact it doesn’t even have an out of hours health care service, and at the moment it has very poor transport links to North Lanarkshire’s NHS hospital and out of hours service.
North Lanarkshire’s hospital - Monklands, is to be rebuilt anew somewhere in North Lanarkshire and three sites have been suggested- none of which are in Cumbernauld, which means once again Cumbernauld residents will have to commute to receive healthcare.
Offers of a FREE piece of land in Cumbernauld by a local businessman, to build the hospital have been quietly dismissed and reasons sited for not housing the hospital within Cumbernauld are along the lines of - it will detract from a hospital in a different locale - which Cumbernauld residents are not supposed to access in the first place!
For years the resident of Cumbernauld have suffered the inconvenience of having to commute miles to receive out of hours healthcare in various locations within north Lanarkshire and with a poor to non existent public transport system, this has left residents out of pocket on taxis, and thinking twice before trying to access such healthcare.
Residents are expected to travel up to 12 miles to access outpatient appointments and hospital treatment. This may not seem too much but when you have to pay for taxis or make the journey in an emergency when time is crucial, then you realise just how dangerous it is for the residents of Cumbernauld.
Now at last we have a chance to have a hospital and service in the town, but once again it seems that the residents of Cumbernauld are being ignored.
I wouldn’t have thought that asking for a hospital to be placed in one of the largest towns in Scotland would have been so big an ask but it seems that at every turn the residents of Cumbernauld are being ignored.
Please sign the petition to help change the minds of those involved in making the vital decision on where to place the New North Lanarkshire Hospital. Please sign the petition to finally allow the residents of Cumbernauld to have a hospital in their own town.
thank you
