NHL: Work With Hockey Content Creators, Not Against Them
NHL: Work With Hockey Content Creators, Not Against Them
The Issue
Hockey creators have helped build passionate online communities that promote the sport to millions of fans across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and other platforms.
Recently, NHL copyright strikes have resulted in hockey content being removed and creator accounts being penalized or banned. My TikTok account, which had grown to over 100,000 followers, was banned after receiving multiple NHL copyright strikes.
Creators spend countless hours editing videos, adding commentary, voiceovers, effects, graphics, storytelling, and other creative elements to make content for hockey fans. For many of us, these pages represent years of work and community building.
We understand that the NHL has the right to protect its copyrighted material. We are not asking the league to give up those rights.
We are asking the NHL to work with creators by providing clearer guidelines for what hockey content can be used, creating reasonable opportunities for transformative and fan-focused content, and communicating with creators before years of work and entire communities are lost.
Hockey creators aren’t trying to replace NHL broadcasts. We’re trying to get people excited about hockey.
We ask the NHL to work with the creator community and develop a better system that protects NHL content while allowing hockey creators and fan communities to continue growing the game.
If you believe hockey creators are an important part of growing the sport, please sign and share this petition.
