Rename The NFL Coach of the Year Award to The Paul Brown NFL Coach of the Year Award.

The Issue

The NFL Coach of the Year Award should be renamed after Hall of Fame Coach Paul Brown.

Paul Brown is called "The Father of Modern Football" because he changed the game with his many innovations that are now common practice in the sport. These innovations include

  • The Draw Play
  • Calling Plays from the Sideline
  • Radio earpiece inside the Quarterback's Helmet (Brown experimented with this in the 1956 preseason.)
  • Practice Squads (Originally called "Taxi Squad" since the players he wanted to stay in town got jobs with the Cleveland Area Franchise of the Yellow Cab Company, owned by then Browns Owner Arthur "Mickey" McBride.)
  • Intelligence Tests as a player evaluation tool
  • Full Time Coaching Staffs
  • Face Masks
  • Playbooks and the Classroom Approach to Game Preparation
  • Use of Game Film
  • The "West Coast Offense". (His offense with the Cincinnati Bengals was adjusted by assistant coach Bill Walsh (Yes, THAT Bill Walsh.) for shorter passes and a more mobile quarterback
  • Although he wasn't the only one, he played a major role in the Integration of Pro Football starting in 1946. (One year before Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers and Bill Veeck signed Larry Doby to the Cleveland Indians.) Brown also integrated The Ohio State Football Program when he signed future Browns Hall of Famer Bill Willis in 1941.

Brown also has what is considered by many The Most Impressive Coaching Tree in the history of the Game. The following all played for and/or coached under Brown and became Hall of Fame Coaches themselves. These include Hall of Famers Weeb Ewbank, Bud Grant, Ara Parseghian, Don Shula, Chuck Noll and Bill Walsh.

Because all of Brown's Championships and most of his innovations came before The Super Bowl Era, invention of NFL Films, etc., his achievements are largely ignored, forgotten or unknown by The NFL and much of the Media. Only recently has his achievements been featured on the NFL Network Series "A Football Life". The NFL can remedy this by simply renaming their Coach of the Year Award "The Paul Brown NFL Coach of the Year Award". Please Mr. Goodell, make this happen.
