Do not authorize any loans to the 49ers for a Santa Clara stadium
Do not authorize any loans to the 49ers for a Santa Clara stadium
The Issue
The citizens of Santa Clara voted on a ballot measure known as "Measure J". This measure led the citizens of Santa Clara to believe that the proposed stadium for the San Francisco 49ers would be built with little taxpayer funds and majority of the funding coming from the San Francisco 49ers and the National Football League. Here is a link to the information that was presented to the voters on the ballot for Measure J: http://www.smartvoter.org/2010/06/08/ca/scl/meas/J/
In a Disposition and Development Agreement that the city of Santa Clara released, after the measure had passed, shows that the citys' citizens would in fact be financing the vast majority of the cost of the stadium. It also shows that the final cost of the stadium is in fact more than $100 million dollars more than they were told.
Opponents (www.santaclaraplaysfair.org) to financing disclosures discrepancies in Measure J, it's term sheets and campaign materials distributed by the 49ers have attained the legally required number of signatures to initiate a referendum on the measure. The city council and city attorney are arguing against the will of the people by attempting to label the complaints of the citizenry as merely "administrative in nature" and not enough to require an election on the matter (see the "Agenda Report" for the upcoming City Council meeting for the city of Santa Clara: http://santaclaraca.gov/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=6711 )
The National Football League has proposed that it would give a limited liability company (that the 49ers created) $150 million dollars to help finance the stadium. The NFL team owners will meet prior to the Super Bowl in Indianapolis. During this meeting they will vote to approve or disapprove this loan to the 49ers for the stadium. The NFL should not promise any funds to the 49ers until the citizens of the city of Santa Clara have had a chance to make their voices heard on this matter.
Roger Goodell should use his power as commissioner of the NFL and postpone any vote by the league on funding this stadium until the citizens of Santa Clara have had their voices heard. In these times of economic uncertainty the spending of hundreds of millions of dollars of "taxpayer" funds should not be considered merely "administrative" changes or ommissions.
Tell Roger Goodell while he should be trying to improve player safety on the field he should also be concerned with the economic safety of the communities the teams in the league reside.
