Wow! Thank you so much to our community members who have signed this petition and shared it!
We weren't aware that change.org prompts signers to donate - Please DO NOT feel obligated to donate. The money helps promote the campaign, but we'd really prefer that your contributions go directly to the community!
Here are some local projects that I recommend donations go to! You can find them on Facebook.
@ICTCommunityFridge offers free food and supplies to Wichita folks, especially those impacted by redlining with less access to grocery stores. They also work to provide food & most importantly dignity for the houseless community.
@StoryTimeVillage is a community literacy program which strives to "give every child in Kansas, regardless of their socioeconomic background, race and or gender the opportunity for a better future"
@RiseUpForYouth is a high school mentoring program intended to "Empower the Next Generation" by providing them with the resources they need to succeed in school and reach their full potential. Local business owners are also needed to mentor students!
Board members in the Newton Community for Racial Justice will be meeting Wednesday 1/27/21 to discuss this issue and make a plan for how they will be approaching the school board.
Thank you again for your support!
I'd really like to state that the props should all go to...
HCHM Kristine Shcmucker who wrote the articles that exposed Lindley's actions on a more accessible level.
Folks in the community like Sara D., Angela B. and others who I am unaware of but know who have been putting in the work to get this change to happen as well as advocating for other racial Justice issues Newton needs to confront for years.
Most importantly, the victims of Lindley who spoke out on their experiences in the 1990s (and also those who have had to silently work through their trauma as well.) Opening up those wounds in an effort to educate us on the harsh reality of our community is beyond brave. Truly, just surviving such hateful behavior as a child/teen and becoming good people despite it all is astounding.
Thanks for your support! Newton can do better.
