Our children are practicing "lock down" drills in the high schools but we are refusing to lock-out intruders? This is concerning. At both of our high schools all doors are kept unlocked and not being monitored, to allow for the Open Campus concept. Why cant we can have both? The current system needs to change and we would like to see a more secure security system put in place. Our petition is vague, because we do not know what the NPS are willing to do. We are not asking that the military be brought in & we hope that making teachers carry guns is not being considered or ever put into place. But, research does shows that the SEL concept alone is not enough, AND access to most school buildings are controlled. Nearly, all schools require visitors to sign or check in when entering a school building and most schools today are being built with security like metal detectors and bullet proof glass included in design, as times are in fact changing. In the meantime we are requesting ALL DOORS BE LOCKED as to not allow anyone in that does not belong in. We respect the school committee stating they will be reviewing the current system. In the meantime we think locking doors or having them monitored is a simple procedure we would like to see put in place. If you are not in support of the petition it if fine, but all comments are appreciated and we would like them posted on the petition so they are shared with the community. Thank You.
