The statue of Christopher Columbus in the North End is now in storage. Students and communities across Massachusetts are removing humiliating mascots and updating team names that retraumatize and dehumanize Native Americans.
After discussions with Mahtowin Munro of UAINE and Councilor Emily Norton (Ward 2), and people throughout Newton, we know that this is the right moment to ask the Newton City Council to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day in the city calendar. Newton citizens are demanding urgent action now, so that the change will be in place by this October, 2020.
We are a coalition of students, teachers and families who support this change. This issue must appear on the City Council docket before this October.
As compassionate, civil-rights minded members of the Newton community, we need your help.
Sign this Petition to pressure the Newton City Council to take action on this issue and help dismantle some of the institutionalized racism and settler-colonialism embedded in our town. It is time for Newton to become a leader in dismantling white supremacy culture, starting in our own city.
