URGENT HOUSING CRISIS - Action to prevent the displacement of working Newquay locals.
The Issue
Urgent call for action to prevent the displacement of Newquay locals due to the housing crisis.
Currently, there are no affordable (if any) flats, houses or even rooms to rent in Newquay.
Due to this, anyone who faces eviction, will be forced to leave the area, or be forced to sleep rough or sofa surf in order to stay in the area.
For the majority of people, this will likely cause the loss of their jobs, the breakdown of relationships and/or a loss of essential support. This in turn, is likely to cause mental health problems, which could in turn leave people with spiraling debt, alcohol and/or drug dependency, and even suicide.
With this in mind, it's in the interest of the local community and society as a whole for immediate action be taken to prevent this from happening.
The responsibility falls to the local and national government to take action, but given the fact that the housing crisis has been left to worsen to this state, it falls to the common people to take action to put pressure on those in office, as well as raise awareness of the issue, and possibly even design and implement our own systems of support.
We demand that;
-Regulations are put in place to temporarily stop all non-essential evictions. i.e If the tenants leaving the property is not essential for the owner for essential financial/living/development reasons.
- The local/national government employ/secure individuals to assess whether an eviction is essential, by inspecting other sources of income and other properties owned.
- The local/national government take immediate action to provide emergency/temporary accommodation for local residents who are asked to leave, until such a time when suitable local properties become available.
Failure to oblige to these demands will clearly demonstrate the local/national governments lack of ability and/or priority to protect the best interests of the common people in the Newquay, Cornwall area, and will prompt further community action to take steps to make sure that the needs and will of the people are met sufficiently.
Please join the Housing Crisis Think-Thank (Newquay, Cornwall) if you are passionate about the issue, or facing eviction yourself.
